June Swoonin'

I don't like where this is going. Earlier this month I had mentioned how the tough June schedule could hurt the Cubs with their depleted pitching. However the team's winning streak at the time had me optimistic about their chances at a winning month. Well throw that out the window. A series loss against the Marlins (with two ugly blowout losses) and getting swept by the not-so-mighty Yankees has exposed this team's weaknesses in a major way.

Not having Wood or Prior is really hurting right now. Those two are stoppers. Big Z is a stopper too, but he's been erratic his last two starts. Having the big aces in the rotation healthy and ready to go helps stop losing streaks before they start. Because seriously, when was the last time anyone has seen the Cubs pitching get battered like this for so many games in a row? Not since '02 at least. But right now things are not good. Borowski is getting lit like a Roman candle. Neifi! is looking more and more pumpkin-like everyday. Corey the Toolman seems to be getting worse (if that's possible). And now they're bringing up the kid Jerome Williams a little earlier than they wanted to.

I can't say I'm surprised by the last week or so of misfortune, but it's so disappointing considering how well the Cubs opened the month. Typical Cubs, always teasing. They start a 4-game series at the vulva-shaped Miller Park today. I might make the drive to catch one of the games up there. There's still time for the Cubs to salvage a winning month and stay in the thick of the wild-card race, but as of right now it's not looking too good.
