Just when you think you have some kind of handle on this game....

I haven't posted in a couple of weeks, mostly because I've been busy with work and other pursuits, but also because the Cubs had been atrocious. They endured an 8 game losing streak that put them far behind the Braves in the Wild Card race. During the streak their bats appeared to have left. Typical of the Cubs to go on an offensive drought and have their bullpen break down again just when the rotation gets back in order. After that horrendous 4-game sweep in Atlanta, most fans were ready to write this team off. Then they go to Florida and not only sweep the Marlins but clubbed them, scoring at leat 8 runs in each game. Where did that come from??? And where was it last week against the Nationals and Braves?

I can't figure this team out, I swear.

So where do they stand? Currently 43-44 12.5 out of first, 6 out of the Wild Card. If they get on a hot streak they could easily surge back into contention for the WC. But given this team's inconsistency both at the plate and on the mound -mostly in the bullpen- it's hard to imagine the Cubs going on a tear similar to that of Houston last year (or this year for that matter). I guess we can hope Hendry makes a deal for another OF or a proven bullpen arm -or both. But at the very least you can't write this team off. Not yet anyway.

Some quick hits:

  • The Cubs hitters appear to have finally figured out that good things happen when you take walks. The Cubs took 9 in yesterdays game and showed great patience throughout the Marlins series. Could this be a glimpse of things to come? Could the team finally change from a free swinging mentality to a more patient and disciplined hitting team? If so a lot of that offensive inconsistency will go away and the Cubbies will start winning more games.
  • There are rumors out there that Dusty is going to be fired during the All-Star break. I highly doubt it. Even if the team goes into a tail spin and ends up losing 90 games, they'll let Dusty finish the season. The Cubs have been lethargic pretty much all year, altough they seemed to have a little more fire in them in Florida. I don't mind Dusty, but this team needs a more in your face, fiery manager who'll light a fire under their collective asses. An Ozzie Guillen type. Either that or break the bank and try to lure Steve Stone into the dugout. Wouldn't that be nice?
  • Did anyone else get tickled when Big Z went out to pinch run for Greenberg on Saturday? There's comedy, there's high comedy, and then there's Big Z running the bases. Fortunately he didn't have to slide this time.
  • And spreaking of Greenberg, it must really suck to get beaned in the back of the head on your very first Major League pitch. Here's hoping he gets some better pitches to look at in his next at-bat.
  • I like what I see so far from that Murton kid. He appears to be living up to the hype.
  • I wonder how the Toolman is doing down in Iowa. No really I do. I sincerely hope he can get his shit together down there and come back to help the team out later in the year.
